New Item Friday

I am late. I have had one of those days where everything seems to take ages and you keep getting interrupted through out the day. However I have managed to go for a run, clean the house, have lunch with the grandparents, catch up on the phone with my mum, mother-in-law and sister, label and pack items for a market on Sunday, sort out the bags for the markets, photograph and list 3 items on etsy and cook dinner! I think I might be Super Woman!

Ok, enough bragging, I'll have a really un-productive day tomorrow. But especially for you today we have 3 lovely new items.

This Sunday I will be at 2 markets! No, I am not splitting myself in half, I will be attending Retrolex in Bristol and my folks will be at Bath Racecourse for their monthly flea market. So if you are in Bath or Bristol this Sunday please come and visit us.

A Little Bit of Pumpkin Left

I can feel Autumn coming to an end as the evenings are getting very cold and frosty. We even put up a Christmas tree at work today! In all fairness it is huge tree so requires a team to put together and sting with lights. We need as much time as possible ahead of the December events. With the last of Autumn I decided to use the last of my pumpkin. I had a small amount of pumpkin left over from my glut of pumpkin 3 ways, and in my house nothing goes to waste. I roasted the pumpkin, pureed it and made Pumpkin Cookies.

I got the recipe from one of my favourite food blogs Vanilla Sugar. I have to say I cheated a little, I didn't have any cream cheese to make the frosting so just used nutella straight from the jar! They were so yummy! You should definitely add nutella and walnuts though as they had some bitterness and some crunch. I think these would actually make great whoopee pies as they have a lovely cake consistency.

Perfect with a hot cup of tea or coffee on a cold dreary morning. Definitely worth giving a try!

More items added to my Christmas list!

I have had a lovely few days enjoying myself at my mini hen-do. We spent Monday in Cardiff at an amazing spa where I laid in the pool and had an amazing massage and facial. We also managed to fit in a delicious meal and Dirty Dancing at the Millennium centre. It was a perfect day! We then spent Tuesday wandering around Bath where I fell in love with lots of things to add to my Christmas wish-list.

Nkuku Enamelware

Orla Kiely Mugs

Cath Kidston Tea Cosy

It is now less than 2 months until I get married and I am starting to feel nervous. I just hope we manage to pull off the vintage, quirky wedding that we are aiming for!

Back to work now and a very busy and hectic time we will be having. I have now started my count-down to Christmas....

New Item Friday

Ok, I confess, I didn't post yesterday because I was too busy watching Kirsties Vintage Home! Her new series is on channel on Thursday evenings at 8pm. I love Kirstie but I must confess, I think she missed the mark a bit on that bedroom. The episode was meant to be loosely 1960s themed and being a lover of the 60s myself, I think it was probably more home-made than vintage. But I loved the living room transformation and found the item about screen printing furniture fascinating (we will have to try that out!).

But I have not failed to deliver today. I have four new items for you and they are all on the theme of Coloured Glass

I will be posting a little later next week as I am going away with my Mum for some girly pre-wedding fun (we are now on the 2 months to go mark and I'm getting a bit nervous!). A spa, good food and the theatre, should sort out my tense nervous muscles.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

A Career in Museums - Serious Stuff

The thing I love about vintage magazines and advertising is that it gives you a taste of what society was like at the time. You get to see the main concerns and desires on people minds, which I think is fascinating.

When flicking through one of my vintage magazines from the 1960s (seen above), I found an amazing article that was clearly meant for me to read - A Career in a Museum!

This article written by Marion Troughton gives a fascinating insight into why a career in a museum is ideal for the young women of the day.
"The work offers good possibilities for girls. They have equal status and pay with men, together with same opportunities to rise to the top of the profession."
Being a slight feminist at heart I find this article uplifting and a great example of the versatility of women and equal rights. However, I am starting to think I should blame this article for there being so many women in the museum sector and all the competition I have had for jobs over the years!

I have to say, I found it a bit strange reading this article. Having just spent the weekend in London, it reminded me of my previous life there and all the pros and cons that came with it. It is 11 months since I left London, although it feels like a life time ago. My current part-time job with the National Trust in Somerset is very different from what I had before, and the work I am doing for the shop is a whole world apart. But funnily enough....I don't regret anything!

I wander if there was a girl in the 1960s who read this article, was in a similar situation to me, and thought the same thing.....

Tutorial: Red Tomato Chutney

So I decided to kill two birds with one stone - trying out a vintage recipe and creating some goodies for my Christmas hampers.

I got this red tomato chutney recipe from a retro cookery book, The Dairy Book of Home Management, which I currently have for sale in my etsy shop. It takes a lot of prep but is really straight forward, just remember that once it is cooked you need to place the hot chutney into hot sterilised jars.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1lb Red tomatoes
  • 1lb Cooking apples
  • 1lb Onions (I used white onions)
  • 1lb Brown sugar
  • 1pint Malt vinegar
  • 1tsp Mustard powder
  • 1tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1tsp Mixed spice

YOU WILL ALSO NEED:
  • Head proof bowl
  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Large lidded saucepan
  • Spoon
  • 3 x 12oz Jam jars (sterilised)
  • Ladle
  • Oven mitts/tea towels

METHOD:

1. The first thing is to peel the tomatoes. I have never peeled a tomato before, and it is fiddly but it will give you a nice smooth chutney so is worth the preparation. Boil the kettle and place your tomatoes in a heat proof bowl. Pour the boiled water over the tomatoes so that they are covered and leave for a few minutes.

2. The tomatoes are ready to peel once the skins start to split (you should be able to see a crack in the skin). Take the tomatoes out of the water - being careful in case the water is hot - and peel by hand. It is easier to peel larger tomatoes, I chose a mix of sizes and colours so it was a bit fiddly.

3. Chop the tomatoes into large sections and place in a large lidded saucepan. Chop up the apples, remove the core and cut into small chunks. Remove the root, tip and skins of the onions and finely chop. Add the apples and onions into the saucepan with the tomatoes.

4. Pour the malt vinegar over the tomatoes, apples and onions and add the spices. Give everything a good stir.
5. Heat the saucepan over a medium heat un-covered. Once the liquid is heated and simmering turn the heat up slightly until the liquid is gently boiling. Give everything a good stir and cover.

6. I left mine gently boiling for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. You may need to leave them a little longer, but you will know it is ready when it is a dark red colour and all the liquid has been absorbed. You should be left with a chutney that parts and reveals the bottom of the pan when you run a spoon through it.
7. Whilst the chutney is cooking you can sterilise your jam jars. I cleaned mine in water and placed in an oven at 150 degrees Celsius for 20 mins.
8. Once the chutney is thick, sticky and hot, spoon into your jam jars. For me, the recipe yielded three 12oz jam jars. Be sure to protect your hands when handling the hot jam jars and hot chutney. Place the lids on tight using a tea towel so you don't burn your hands.

This chutney gets better with age, so make a couple of months in advance and keep in a cool dark place until you want to consume it. They would make lovely presents and go great with cheeses and cold meats. Mine will be stored away and added to my Cheese Board hampers come Christmas. I thought this recipe was really simple to follow and all the ingredients are cheap and easily available. The dark colour did worry me slightly but I used dark brown sugar so you may get a nicer colour with a light brown sugar instead. Give it a try and let me know how you get on.

London Weekend

This weekend we were in London catching up with friends. There was lots of food involved over this weekend, which is my favourite thing to spend a weekend doing.
Having gotten in to London we had some time to kill so we hung out for a while in the Nordic Bakery near Piccadilly Circus. I had an amazing savoury pie called a Karelian, a rye crust with a potato mash filling and egg butter on top, whilst the other half had an Oven Pancake with raspberry jam. Yum!

This was followed by cream tea at Fortnum & Masons to celebrate 2 friends birthday and then in the evening Dim Sum and cocktails at the Drunken Monkey near Shoreditch (can I just see that I now think cocktails should always be accompanied by Dim Sum).

But that wasn't the end. On Sunday morning we had breakfast at the Duck & Waffle, a fantastic restaurant on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower near Liverpool Street station. The food was delicious and the view completely stunning. And if that wasn't enough, we then went to the Dennis Sever house! An experience not to be missed, Dennis Sever house is stepping back in time. The entire house is set up in the 18th century as if the family that occupied it have just left the room. It's lite by candle light, the scent of cloves, coffee and fire burning fill ever room. Not a museum, not an art gallery, not a theme park, completely unique. I wanted to live there.

So new things to add to my wishlist:

  • Buy the Nordic Bakery cook book

  • Learn to make Dim Sum

  • Have a Victorian range in my dream home

Before I go, let me wish everyone a HAPPY BONFIRE NIGHT! Stay safe out there if you are using fireworks but have lots of fun!

Remember, Remember, the 5th of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason, should ever be forgot.
