This little piggy went to market...

I apologies for the shop looking a little sparse at the moment. Its not because I don't have lots of treasure hidden away, I promise, but because I am off to market.

On Sunday 31st July I am heading to the Pear Affair: Art, Crafts and Flea market in Ashbury village hall. This is a new up and coming market in Ashbury, Wiltshire, UK. There is a nice mix of different stalls including quilters, photographers, cake makers, ceramicists and of course stalls selling vintage finds. In order to have the most full and attractive stall I am currently stocking up. I'm going to be featuring new furniture, china, and a very attractive little piggy.

Because I will be at the market my etsy shop will be temporarily closed on Sunday. But have no fear, once it is back up on the 1st August I promise to start adding more and more treasures.

Keep checking in and wish me luck for Sunday!
Love to all

Slow and steady wins the race!

It's hard to try and start a business whilst having a full time job, a fiance, etc, etc. I tend to get worried that I'm not making enough items, restoring enough things, doing enough stalls, and above all making enough sales! I have this dream in my mind of a physical Springy Beard shop as my ultimate goal. I can just imagine the small little shop, an apartment above, a workshop out the back. Being able to have all my items in one place and for people to visit me! But I have to remember that, whilst the dream is achievable (we must remain positive), it is an event for the far distant future.

So, to help me cope when I get that stressed feeling I just remember the saying: "Slow and steady wins the race". And in homage to this saying, and the hare and tortoise who set us this very example, I have created my very first treasury list on etsy of related goodies.

The aim of the treasury list is to curate your own collection of items from other people's shops. It helps promote others and gain communication between sellers. Make sure you check out my list and other as well.

Thats all for now. Lots of love

Salt, lime, but wheres the tequila?

My current obsession for my own personal collection is a particular shaped cutlery set, seen in the images below. I just think it has the most elegant and yet rustic shape to it - is that too much of a contradiction? So, at the weekend we went to our local car boot to hunt for more treasures for the shop. But what do I come across as I'm rummaging through but a huge hoard of my favourite cutlery! Unfortunately I couldn't resist, but the problem was they were all tarnished and black. So this is my first top tip for you fellow bargain hunters out there.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR TARNISHED CUTLERY AT HOME:
What you need from your store is a lemon or lime, some salt, a sponge with a scourer and a large bowl of water.

The first thing to do is squeeze some juice into the water and put your cutlery in to soak. Then take out one piece if cutlery at a time and rub the surface with the lemon or lime. You then want to moisten the sponge in the water and pick up some salt with the sponge on the scourer side. You then need to gently rub the salt into the surface of the metal until the surface starts to shine, dipping it in and out of the water.

Basically, what is happening is the acid from the citrus helps break down the tarnish layer on the metal, the salt and scourer then abrade the surface removing the tarnish.

WARNING: You want to abrade the surface gently as you are actually removing the top surface of the metal. If you are at all worried about your treasure being damaged then use the soft side of the sponge instead and be very gentle. You will also want to make sure you rinse the cutlery thoroughly after removing the tarnish to make sure the citrus doesn't continue to break down the surface.

I hope that this has helped you guys bring back to life some things at home, and also encourage you not to be put off buying cutlery that you see in the carboot.

Speak to you all soon.

Featured

So, after my initial joy at having made a sale I have had very little time to concentrate on the collection. But luckily I have a small bank of items so I decided to add some extra ones in the shop to keep things ticking over.

Another exciting bit of news was that one of my items has featured in someone's 'treasury' list curated by MyGypsyEyes. Now, I'm new to etsy so I'm not sure how this all works but I am so pleased that someone has seen something beautiful in one of my items. Check out the feature here.

I have also been asked to take part in a market in October.

All round it has been a very good day. I hope yours was too.

The first of many....fingers crossed!

I know I shouldn't be too excited.......but I am. I have made my first sale! A huge thank you to leighmeryl in Massachusetts for purchasing some of my items. I hope this will be the start of something great.

I'm afraid I don't have any more to add to todays blog, but I will include some photos of some items that are still available for sale. If you like them I would grab them while you can - I seem to be popular.

Love to you all

WE ARE LIVE!

I have had a very busy weekend: photographed my current collection, photoshopped all the images, worked out costings for delivery, uploaded everything onto etsy, got the other half to finish writing the website, managed to work how to connect blogger facebook and twitter......

I am exhausted.

But I'm hoping you will be pleased with the results. Check out the website which links everything together www.springybeard.co.uk. I will continue to add new content as and when but the initial push is done. Phew!

I have to thank my other half for all his techy help and everyones continued support.

Love to you all
